The barbell overhead squat is a compound exercise that targets strength, stability, and mobility. It involves squatting with a barbell held overhead, engaging the shoulders and core for balance and strength while working the lower body through a full range of motion.
How to do it
- Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, holding a barbell overhead with a wide grip.
- Engage the core and ensure the bar is directly over the midline of the body.
- Descend into a squat by bending the knees and hips, keeping the chest upright.
- Lower until thighs are parallel to the ground or deeper, maintaining the bar position.
- Press through the heels to return to standing, keeping the bar steady overhead.
