The Smith Lateral Step-Up is an exercise focusing on leg strength and stability by performing lateral step-ups on a bench with a barbell across the shoulders. It primarily targets the quads while also engaging the glutes and adductors for balance and stabilization.

How to do it

  1. Position a bench under the Smith Machine and set the bar at shoulder height.
  2. Stand sideways with one foot on the bench and the barbell on your shoulders.
  3. Engage your core, step up laterally onto the bench, driving through the heel.
  4. Extend your leg fully at the top, keeping your balance.
  5. Lower yourself back to the starting position in a controlled manner.
