The dumbbell lateral step-up targets lower body strength and balance by requiring the lifter to step sideways onto an elevated platform while holding dumbbells. This exercise emphasizes coordination and unilateral leg and hip strength, making it effective for enhancing overall lower body power and symmetry.

How to do it

  1. Stand to the side of a bench with a dumbbell in each hand, arms at your sides.
  2. Place one foot on the bench, ensuring your whole foot is supported.
  3. Push through your heel to rise onto the bench, bringing your opposite foot up to meet the elevated foot.
  4. Step down carefully with the same foot you started with, maintaining control.
  5. Repeat for desired reps before switching sides.
