The barbell upright row targets the shoulder muscles, particularly focusing on building strength and stability. The exercise involves lifting a barbell vertically in front of the body towards the chin. This movement primarily enhances the shoulders and traps, promoting better posture and upper body strength.

How to do it

  1. Stand upright with feet shoulder-width apart, holding the barbell with an overhand grip.
  2. Begin with the barbell resting against the thighs, arms fully extended.
  3. Lift the barbell vertically, keeping it close to the body until it reaches chest height.
  4. Pause briefly at the top, squeezing the shoulder blades together.
  5. Lower the barbell back to the starting position in a controlled manner.
